How to Get to Robson Street

Robson Street is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, and is accessible from pretty much anywhere. The entire length of Robson Street is quite walkable, but if you’re looking to just shop, a handful of blocks in a row contain the major shopping district. Here’s 5 — okay 4 — easy ways to get to Robson Street:

  1. Skytrain. Catch the Skytrain in Vancouver, Coquitlam, New Westmister, Surrey — anywhere the Skytrain is, hop on it, and head to Vancouver. Either get off at Granville Street Station or Burrard Street Station, and you just need to walk a few short blocks southwest, and you’re on Robson Street. Head either left, or right for endless shopping opportunities.
  2. Drive. While parking is sometimes hard to find, driving to Robson Street is quite easy. Head into Vancouver, and turn left on Burrard street, and follow it for a couple blocks southwest. Once you see Robson Street, turn, and hunt for parking. A tip: parking a block or two off of Robson may be the best idea, as parking on Robson Street is very hard to find. Other main streets that intersect Robson Street are Denman, Howe, Thurlow and Georgia.
  3. Taxi. No matter where you are, a Taxi driver will be able to find Robson Street. If they can’t… well… that taxi-driver clearly shouldn’t be driving anyone anywhere. Robson Street is one of the most popular destinations in all of Vancouver, afterall!
  4. Walk. If you live anywhere in the West End, set your sights to the downtown core and start walking that way — you’ll end up crossing paths with Robson Street eventually. If you live in Coal Harbour, set course to the West End… again, You’ll end up on Robson Street eventually. Its a main artery throughout the downtown core.
  5. Fly? Okay, maybe not… but I’m sure you could see Robson Street from a plane….

And if all else fails… why not just click here for a Robson Street map? Plan your own quest to Robson Street with interactive directions.

Cheap Accommodations on Robson Street

cheap accommodationsWith Vancouver being the world class city it is, finding cheap hotels on Robson Street can be tricky. We’ve put together 5 great tips to finding cheap accommodations on, or near, Robson Street in breathtaking Vancouver, British Columbia.

  1. Choose the right time of year. The holidays will always be busy, and rates will be high, try to avoid them if possible. Also, keep in mind local events (Vancouver fireworks, Olympic Games, Gay Pride, Canada Day, etc), as when demand is high, and supply is short, prices go up. Also, weekends tend to fill up quickly too, so plan a mid-week stay (or at least start mid-week, and continue on through the weekend)
  2. Book early. If you know you’ll be travelling to Vancouver in a few months, book today, not a week before you arrive. This way, you have enough time to shop around, watch prices change, and even secure a cheaper deal if one comes up. Most Robson Street hotels have good fair cancellation policies, that in the event you just can’t make it after all, you won’t be out too much (if any) money.
  3. Find what you need, not what you want. Everyone wants a 5 star Robson Street hotel, with in-suite Jacuzzi, view of the mountains, with valet parking. Do you need it all? No really, do you NEED it? Consider a bare bones hotel room, with no frills or gimmicks. After all, if your only steps from Robson Street, how much time will you be actually spending in your cheap hotel room anyways?
  4. Ask them for better. Sometimes, all it takes is to ask the registration desk if they can do better, or have any promotions on… or when they will have a promotion on. Maybe there’s a cheap special, if you arrive in Wednesday, and leave Saturday. Maybe its 50% cheaper the third night. You never know if you don’t ask.
  5. Book online and save. Lots of travel sites out there have better rates than the actual hotel. Sometimes, it’s because they can’t fill space, other times its because its cheaper for them to have a bookings automatically done, versus having a human booking it. Check out the major travel sites, and cross compare. Site A might be $109… Site B might be $99 – $10 bucks isn’t much, but if you’re staying for 2 weeks, it adds up.

Hopefully these 5 tips on finding cheap accommodations on Robson Street helps you find the perfect hotel room for your stay. And if you’re smart, you’ll try to use all 5 tips at once, instead of just one or two of them. Keep in mind that Vancouver has a fairly good transit system, and if you want extremely cheap accommodations (relatively speaking), start looking outside of the downtown core, near the SkyTrain or on a bus route… or… just take a cab.

Monopoly Vancouver?

MonopolyRecently, Monopoly announced an initiative to find new destinations for their traditional monopoly game… on a global scale! Without any doubt, Vancouver has made the short list. Is it because of our upcoming Olympic Games? Our breathtaking oceans and mountains? Or even our world class shopping on Robson Street? No doubt, Vancouver will make a mark on this global edition of Monopoly sometime soon.

It wouldn’t be the first time Vancouver and Monopoly come together. In the Canadian edition of Monopoly, both Stanley Park and Robson Street are listed as destinations. Sure, British Columbia only has two spots, out of 22 spaces, but the two spots Vancouver does have are considered world class nonetheless.

Vote for Vancouver on the World Edition of Monopoly today by clicking here. February 29th is the last day to vote, so vote today, and vote often!

Robson Square Roof?

Controversy is a-brewing in Vancouver, over adding a roof over the famed Robson Square. Not just any roof, but a clam-shaped roof. Maybe that’s where the biggest controversy is coming from… a clam shaped anything sounds kind of dumb, but a roof?

But after looking at the sketch of Robson Square’s roof proposal, it doesn’t look too bad. Sure it takes away from the original intentions of Robson Square – an open area for all to enjoy – but it does make it slightly more useable in the less than stellar weather, which we enjoy a good majority of the year.

The downside of course, is the cost… For $40 million dollars, they can add a roof, and update the square. Is that reasonable? Who knows – the project has had a pretty tight seal on all the details for Robson Square.

And for those who don’t know what Robson Square is, it’s a three block complex made of concrete. IT has a pool, waterfalls, plants, and a 7 story law court with exposed framing and tilted glass. It also homes the old courthouse, which is now home to the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was built in 1980, and designed by architect Aurthur C. Erickson.
